We give out a great deal of personal information every day, and by using a Facebook account, you could be giving out more than you bargained for. When many of us log in, like pages, and write comments or status updates, targeted advertisements will appear on the right of screen offering everything from concert tickets to university degrees, depending on what it is you’re writing about. And when you’re logging on to web pages from the same browser, Facebook is accessing that too, making note of everywhere you visit and how much time you spend. So whilst this is great for Facebook’s many advertisers, does this mean social media is becoming Big Brother?

Facebook is a fast and easy to use networking tool, and can greatly increase the search engine optimisation of a brand or company figure. However, with this level of access to your personal information and your browser, users may not feel completely secure with Facebook and its associated apps. People who use these networks like to share and communicate, but the levels of sharing have increased from photos and comments to the sites you visit, and even the advertisements and apps you have removed from your sidebar. An additional security threat is that up until this week, the cookies your browser creates when accessing websites remain active in the Facebook server even after you’ve logged out, possibly containing credit card details or other sensitive personal information.

The type of access Facebook has to your personal information may leave a few questioning the integrity of the site, and wondering how many of their friends have made the move to Google+, the next innovative social networking site. Is this the case of another one bites dust?
